It is a sad day in the book world as another bookstore makes the tough decision to close its doors. Book City's Bloor West Village location will be closed in March in order to focus on the company’s remaining four shops.

In conversation with The Toronto Star, general manager Ian Donker said, “We need stores that have enough square footage for us to be able to add something new without hurting our selection of books. We’re looking for a few things to take over for the small decline that’s happened because of ebooks, online sales, that type of thing.”

Book City is not the only bookstore feeling the economic pressure as independent stores battle with book digitization, online sales and competitive box stores. Already this year, Toronto has lost its oldest independent bookstore, The Book Mark, and Books for Business is set to close in March.
