Jeanne Beker, author of Passion for Fashion (Tundra Books, 2008), will be at the Yorkville Branch of the TPL for Keep Toronto Reading's Books and Wine Program on February 21 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Born in Toronto, Ontario, Jeanne Beker began acting at the age of sixteen. In the early ’70s, she studied acting at the Herbert Berghoff Studio in New York, mime with Étienne Decroux in Paris, and theater at Toronto’s York University. In 1975, Beker landed her first media job with CBC Radio in St. John’s, Newfoundland. In 1979, she launched and cohosted the groundbreaking TV series The New Music at City TV. Beker helped launch MuchMusic in 1983 and launched Fashion Television in 1985, which is now seen in over 100 countries.
Beker began writing a column in Flare magazine in the early ’90s, and launched @fashion, one of the first fashion sites on the Internet. In 2003, Beker also launched FQ Magazine, then SIR Magazine in 2005. Jeanne Beker is currently the cocreator and coexecutive producer of Cover Stories, a syndicated documentary TV series about the behind-the-scenes workings of FQ and SIR magazines.
