The Great Canadian Writer's Craft

Share |
This spring, Toronto high-school students conducted interviews with some of Canada’s finest poets. The interviews feature the savvy journalism of two Writer’s Craft classes under the collaborative tutelage of teacher John Ouzas and poet a.rawlings. The impetus for this project began when Mr. Ouzas invited angela to spend five days in February 2011 thinking through poetry with 35 of his students. During this time, students wrote individual and collaborative poetry, worked with automatic and procedural forms, conducted research to support poetry generation and performed texts. In the middle of this torrent of awesome, angela brought 50 poetry books from her personal library to share with students; this offered an introduction to the work of poets interviewed here.

To build a bridge between high-school students and the world of Canadian letters is an incredible opportunity. John and angela decided to create a summative project for the Writer’s Craft classes, which would feature cumulative exercises designed to expose the students to a variety of writing practices (from contemporary poetry to journalism, brief autobiography to editorial feedback). The long-term results include these fantastic interviews, conducted by students.

Rachel Wedekind:

Hello Gary, thank you for taking the time out of your day to do an interview with me. I was first introduced to your work when angela brought frogments from the frag pool to her poetry session. I was drawn to the particular style since it incorporated drawn images into the poetry. Being an artist, I found this quite interesting and different from conventional poetry.

Masque was published in 2004. In six years, you’ve had three more books published, and while they all possess a similar power, each has a very different feel from the others. What drives you to make those leaps between each book? Do you ever feel less attached to your previous works as you create new ones?

Hello! These are a few questions I have for you. Thank you for taking the time to answer them.

I read in your biography that you were born in Vancouver, raised in Toronto and now live in St. Catharines. Which of these places is your favourite place to live? Did growing up in Canada have an influence on your writing? What does it mean to you to be a Canadian poet?

I’ve read that you were raised, or at least educated, in Calgary, which is, from what I understand, a little more culturally conservative than Toronto is, where you live now. Have the cities you’ve lived in, and their responses to your interests, at all affected or influenced your writing?
