Jan Rehner teaches academic and professional writing at York University. She has travelled to France many times, and visited many local French Resistance museums. Morley Torgov, author of such Canadian classics as The Outside Chance of Maximilian Glick and St. Farb's Day, and a recipient of the Order of Mariposa by the Leacock Society for lifetime achievement, has begun a new series of historical mysteries, based on the lives of famous composers of the mid 19th century.

The first in the series is officially launching on May 29th at 7:00 p.m. at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto. The novel is called Murder in A-Major and the plot revolves around a mysterious off-key A on the piano of Clara and Robert Schumann. With a deft touch, Torgov follows the vagaries of their temptuous lives to reinvent the underlying reasons for Robert Schumann's eventual descent into madness.

The Toronto Small Press Book Fair celebrates its 21st birthday at the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre on Saturday, June 7. From noon to 5:00 p.m. publishers, writers and fans and friends of Canada's small presses will gather at the JCC to support a long-standing tradition on the Canadian literary scene.

Small presses of every size, from the micro to the not-so-tiny will have for sale all kinds of books, chapbooks and zines that offer a different perspective and a chance for readers to step outside the mainstream.
