Toronto crime writer, Rick Blechta (A Case of You), has been chosen to be this year's Guest of Honour at Genrecon, taking place on Saturday, May 3rd. This interesting and eclectic one-day conference is held every year in Sarnia, ON, hosted by the Lambton County Library. The name comes from the fact that all categories of genre fiction are included: crime writing, science fiction, fantasy, horror, romance, experimental writing, etc. Panel discussions are always interesting and very eclectic with lots of audience participation. Best of all, it's free!

Part of the Life Writing Series from Wilfrid Laurier University Press, this book a collection of stories from Margaret and Jim Norquay's seven years in Mayerthorpe, Alberta in the early 1950s. Told with affection and gentle humour, the stories cover the challenges, heartaches, and delights of a young community and a minister and his wife in a very new marriage.

Johanna Skibsrud, author of Late Nights With Wild Cowboys (Gaspereau Press), and Karen Houle, author of During (Gaspereau Press), are reading at the LitLive Reading Series on May 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sky Dragon Centre, 27 King William Street, Hamilton.

Celebrate Asian Heritage Month with the Toronto Public Library. The library is featuring the recently published Reel Asian: Asian Canada On Screen (Coach House Books, 2007). The event is hosted by the book’s editor Elaine Chang and will feature recent work from filmmakers Nicole Chung (Wilson Leaves Home), Khanhthuan Tran (Good Luck Counting Sheep) and Midi Onodera (Slightseer). Jessica Westhead, author of Pulpy and Midge (Coach House Books, 2007) is reading at Chapters in Oshawa on Sunday, May 10 at 1:00 p.m.

Jessica Westhead is a Toronto writer who has published stories in litmags such as The Antigonish Review, Matrix, This Magazine, Geist, Taddle Creek, Forget Magazine, Word and Kiss Machine. Her fiction was included in the anthology Desire, Doom & Vice: A Canadian Collection, and her short-story chapbook, Those Girls, was published by Greenboathouse Books in 2006.
