Hamilton's annual gritLIT festival runs from April 3 to 6 at the Art Gallery of Hamilton and the Sky Dragon Centre. The festival's aim is "to make Hamilton, often thought of as a gritty city, a destination for book loving audiences as well as for authors from coast to coast." It's a short trip from Toronto, and it's worth the trip. Click here for the festival's schedule.

Rick Blechta is a crime novelist and musician living in Toronto and has twin passions in life: crime writing and music. He's had five novels published and the sixth, A Case of You, has just been released. His 2005 novel, Cemetery of the Nameless was a finalist for an Arthur Ellis Award for Best Crime Novel. Alessandro Porco is a poet, critic, and scholar. Currently, at the State University of New York at Buffalo, he is working toward a dissertation on the subject of hip-hop poetics. The author of The Jill Kelly Poems and the forthcoming Augustine in Carthage, he is originally from Brampton, Ontario. His poetry has appeared in such literary magazines as Matrix, Grain, and Queen Street Quarterly.

On Wednesday, April 9, one of Toronto’s most consistently interesting literary presses unloads its latest chamber of armor-piercing books upon the reading public and this season, most of them have been manufactured right here in Toronto. The Coach House Spring Launch features new novels from acclaimed Toronto author Maggie Helwig (recently spotlighted in Toronto Life) and celebrated Toronto-based playwright Claudia Dey, and both books feature Ontario’s capital city as their settings, even as a character in itself (though a quite different character in each novel).

Poetry meets painting in an unusual combined reading and exhibition on Sunday, April 13 at 2:00 p.m at the Women's Art Association at 23 Prince Arthur Ave. in Toronto. Five published poets -- Merle Nudelman, John Oughton, Mary Lou Soutar-Hynes, Sheila Stewart and Elana Wolff -- will reading works written in response, or resonant with, visual arts pieces by the studio members of the Association. John McFetridge will be reading from his new mystery, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (ECW Press), on April 16 at 6:30 at Just Us Cafe in the Beaches (2010 Queen Street East).
John McFetridge, author of Dirty Sweet and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, became fascinated with crime when attending a murder trial at age twelve with his police officer brother.
